Snow with Barn

Watercolor from Imagination. 8 x 8. Winter of 2010, when Virginia Beach got lots of rare snow. $125

Norfolk

Watercolor, from Memory. Book mark size. A doodle actually. Free.

Chesapeake Bay Bridge from Little Creek

Watercolor, plein air. 5 x 7 in. After a long trip, I walked the bay with my dog. I sat leaning against a rock at the fence, happy I to be painting again. You get sand in your paints and on your painting, but nevermind. Just wait till it's dry and brush it off. When I took the painting to Skipjack for my show in November 2010, the owners recognized the spot and said their friend lives right there. Always wondered who lives in those houses right on the water. $225

Dunes from Memory on Treated Paper

Gouache from Memory, and in the Doodle category. 9 x 12 in. I had paper left over from a Carole Barnes class which was gessoed. It made the watercolor, and gouache bleed, no crisp edges possible. Love the impact of the colors. $150

Back Yard in the Great Northwest, Version 2

Watercolor, plein air. 6 x 10 in. Painted with my normal palette. $140

Back Yard in the Great Northwest

Watercolor, plein air. 5 x 7 in. Painted on a visit to Seattle. I used 3 or 4 pigments. It was a challenge to try to find colors I am used to without a full palette. Yet I liked the result. $125

Owl's Head Light Beach Cliff

Watercolor, plein air. 12 x 16 in. $255 This is one that I liked better after I had not seen it for a few weeks. I was disgusted while working on it. Then my guru says you shouldn't be disgusted with it, and I felt more frustrated. Why can't I see what he sees? But later and it had more appeal. I wanted to put more information up on that pine covered hill. But shall I leave it.

From the Shade, Owl's Head Harbor

Watercolor, plein air. 6 x 10 in. Day one 2010. Maine Master Watercolor Class. The huge tree in Amy's yard is sufficient for many of us to keep our cool while painting. I was very interested in the colors in the tree in relation to the colors of the sea. For sale at Skipjackmarinegallery.com for $275

Rocks at Drift In Beach

Watercolor, plein air. 6 x 10 in. For sale at Skipjack Marine Gallery Olde Towne Portsmouth, VA. Here is an example of "the faster I paint, the better I like it." $275

Waterspointe Place

SOLD.  Watercolor, plein air. 6 x 10. Won 2nd Prize in the plein air show at The Artists Gallery 2010 This was my back yard. This work is painted in mosquito bites. It was worth it.

Christmas Tree Doodle

Watercolor. 8 x 10 in. This doodle became a Christmas tree gone mad.

Sundown

Gouache over Watercolor, or possibly Watercolor totally. 8 x 8 in. Color study. I found a practice sky wash in a pile of paper and painted the sunset colors over it.

Scribble Doodle

Gouache, I think. About 9 x 12 in. This came from remembering what my Swedish grand father, Far Far, used to do. He would ask us to scribble on a paper. Then we would hand him the pencil and he would make a picture of something out of our mark. We were always amazed. Now I do this with my grand children. Here I changed the game. I made a scribble and then painted in the sections for the sheer joy of putting the colors onto the paper and choosing which colors should go down next to others.

Freida

Watercolor. Painted from life. 12 x 16 in. Frieda often sits across from me on Monday nights in painting class. The bright blue tape around her painting will be changed to a better color for my painting. She did not know I was painting her, but I showed it to her after it was done.

Red Dog Cartoon

Watercolor. About 8 x 10 in. Copied this idea from a book my friend Melissa has.

Zushia

Watercolor. 4 x 6 in. One day after Zues had been with me about 3 months, I sketched him from memory just to see if I could get the idea of him down. Now that he is back with his original owner, I am glad I have this memory of him in paint.

Woman Kneeling

This is a doodle, probably gouache. 2010. About 8 x 10. After I finished I saw a woman kneeling.

Snow through the Window Above the Door

Watercolor. About 3 x 6 in. Looking down from my loft painting table and out into the back yard at the snow, the shadows of the trees and the window frame.

Chessie Bay

Watercolor. 3 x 5 in. This is simply a color study after my daily walk on the bay.

Happy Factory

Gouache. about 8 x 10 in. Playing with my new gouache pigments that were on sale at Jerry's. It was just a doodle but it reminds me of the Allied Fiber factory on Old Bush River Road and St. Andrews Road in Columbia, SC. My artist friend said, "that's the happiest factory I've ever seen."

Long Gray Tee Pee

gouache. about 6 x 10 in. 2010. Where I live. At the moment I write, it is for sale, my piece of the long gray tee pee. I hope it does not sell and I love it here. This is from memory, sort of a sketchy idea not even remotely meant to be accurate. But I love it for some reason I cannot explain.

Chic's Beach Near Lesner Bridge

Chic's Beach. That day Zushi and I walked all the way down to the bridge where I sat and painted while he explored. After a while, a group of students came by and I said, "If you see a big dog, he's friendly." They said, "We already met him." and there he came rounding the corner at his best galump "Look Ma! I found a whole buncha new friends!"

We walked on home and the boy was so tired that day. But we were both happy.

Owl's Head Light

2010. Good weather. I painted in class and out of class. The week I stayed in Owl's Head I decided it was time that I saw their light house. It was within walking distance. Up the 51 steps with the other tourists and down again, taking pictures. Then I sat on the fence and painted this.

Original is at Skipjackmarinegallery.com. About 6 by 10 inches. Giclees available.
